JUNE 20-21 CRUISE TO
MYSTERY BAY STATE PARK ON MARROWSTONE ISLAND

MYSTERY BAY CRUISE - June 19-21, 2009
Six boats braved the brisk winds to spend the weekend at Mystery Bay State Park.

We left Lagoon Point a little after 4:00 on Friday and had a smooth trip, arriving before 6:00. The Rodgers’ and McArthurs were already there.

Northwest winds started to build, and the Petersons, who arrived next, had a bumpy crossing from the Keystone boat ramp. The Pritchards arrived next after a brisk sail and a few maneuvers to avoid the Friday evening cruise ship parade. The Bondelids also had some heavy weather sailing and dropped the hook until morning.

On Saturday, the sun was in and out, so we chatted and walked or dingied down to the Nordland General Store.

In the evening, we bundled up and had a potluck on the dock. By dessert time, the cold was too much for us, so we enjoyed pie and ice cream in the Pritchard’s beautiful NOKOMIS.

By Sunday, the winds had calmed down, and the Pritchard’s daughter and family joined us for lunch via Boston Whaler from Keystone.

The trip back to Whidbey was smooth motoring for most, even for the sailboats. The McArthurs left very early to make the flood at Deception Pass and had to endure a heavy residual slop coming in from the Strait. They were rewarded for their troubles by a pod of orcas that joined them briefly during the crossing. A great start to the cruising season.
