Description: Mr. Byrum is both an avid power boater and a sailor. He and his wife LeAnn have a 42’ cabin cruiser on Lake Union and Spence has crewed sailing vessels ranging from Lasers to the Coast Guard Cutter Eagle, the USCG Academy’s 300 foot training barque. He served in numerous crew positions on the Eagle over the course of four years at the Academy ranging from the scullery to the “ready boat crew” to Officer of the Deck. He was ship’s company when the Eagle won the Teapot Trophy for the fastest 120 hours under sail while racing in the North Atlantic from Halifax, Nova Scotia to Cork, Ireland. He was aboard Eagle when she led Tall Ships into Boston, New York City, Norfolk, Savannah, and Miami and also sailed Eagle throughout the Caribbean before sailing back to homeport in New London, CT.

Spence’s presentation to SWYC will focus on his experiences sailing the Eagle in the open ocean and why “lessons-learned” on the Eagle impacted virtually every aspect of his life since he last stepped off the gangway in 1982.

Guests are welcome!
